Melding brings
points

I

Pinochle uses a double deck: two sets of 9 through Ace, 48 cards total. Before the actual trick-taking, players meld combinations from their hand for immediate points.

The most valuable meld is called "Pinochle" – Jack of Diamonds plus Queen of Spades – and gives the game its name.

Players bid in turn for the right to determine trump.

Play the demanded suit if possible, otherwise trump or off-suit.

Highest trump card wins, otherwise highest card of the demanded suit.

Counting points
Meld points plus trick points (Aces=11, Tens=10, Kings=4, Queens=3, Jacks=2) are added. The first to reach 1000 points wins.

When sorting your hand, actively look for Pinochle and Runs – they bring the most meld points and influence your bidding behavior.

Only bid as high as your hand is actually worth – roughly add meld points and expected trick points before bidding.

+

Play high trump cards conservatively in the first tricks to maintain control for the crucial endgame.

Observe which melds your opponents show – this reveals which trump cards they likely still have.

Common Mistakes

Forgetting to show a meld – meld points must be actively announced, otherwise they are lost.

Overestimating the trick-taking strength of the hand in bidding, just because the meld points are high.

Playing trump Aces too early, instead of saving them for critical late tricks.

Ignoring the double deck peculiarity – with two identical cards of each rank, the probability calculation changes significantly.
