Rummy with a
Caribbean twist

I

Kalooki (also Kaluki) comes from Jamaica and is a popular rummy variant. With two decks plus jokers, players build sets and runs.

The special feature: jokers are very strong — they can take on any value. But whoever takes a joker from another player's meld must use it immediately.

II · Preparation

Before the
game begins

II
1
Shuffle the cards
Shuffle two 52-card decks plus 2 jokers — 106 cards in total.
2
Deal the cards
Depending on player count: 13 cards for 2–4 players, 11 cards for 5–6 players.
3
Discard pile
Turn over the top card. Joker as the first card: put it back, draw again.
Before you start

Plan your first meld carefully — it must reach at least 50 points, otherwise you're not allowed to lay down at all.

4
Lay off

VI
Strategy tips
+

Plan your first meld from the very start — collect cards deliberately that together reach at least 50 points.

+

Use high-value cards like Aces and face cards for your first meld — they help you hit the minimum score faster.

+

Free jokers from other players' melds whenever you hold the matching real card — it weakens the opponent and strengthens your own hand.

+

Keep in mind that a Kalooki (everything at once) scores double — sometimes it pays to hold back your melds.

Common mistakes

Attempting a first meld under 50 points — it's simply not allowed and costs you a turn.

Hoarding jokers in your hand for too long instead of using them for the first meld.

Forgetting that a freed joker must be used immediately — otherwise the turn is invalid.

Keeping too many high-value cards in hand at the end — Aces and jokers count especially many penalty points.
