I · The Idea

Meld
or knock

I

Gin Rummy is the classic two-player rummy. The goal is to arrange all 10 hand cards into sets (same ranks) or runs (consecutive cards of one suit).

Whoever knocks ends the round. What matters is the “deadwood” – cards that belong to no meld. Less deadwood wins.

II · Setup

Before the
game begins

II
1
Deal the cards
10 cards per player. The remaining cards form the draw pile.
2
Discard pile
The top card is turned over. The non-dealer may take it or decline.
3
Point values
Ace = 1 point, face cards = 10 points, number cards = face value.
Before you start

Sort your hand into possible runs right away – that way you can see immediately which cards are pure deadwood.

III · Card Values
How to end
the round
III
K
Knock
Deadwood ≤ 10
Whoever knocks reveals their hand. The opponent may still lay off on the knocker's melds.
G
Gin
No deadwood
All 10 cards in melds – the perfect hand. 25 bonus points.
U
Undercut
Opponent wins
If the opponent has less deadwood after laying off: they win + 25 bonus points.
B
Big Gin
11 cards
All 11 cards (after drawing) in melds – 31 bonus points.
IV · Gameplay

Turn by
turn

IV
1
Draw a card
Draw from the face-down pile or from the open discard pile.
2
Form melds
Sort your cards internally – identify sets and runs.
3
Discard a card
Place one card on the discard pile. Always stay at 10 cards.
4
Knock or Gin
As soon as deadwood is ≤ 10, you may knock. With 0 deadwood: declare Gin.
5
Count points
The winner scores the difference in deadwood points. The first to reach 100 points wins the game. Winning every hand earns a 100-point bonus.
V · Variants
Variants
V

Gin Rummy has many popular variations.

O
Oklahoma Gin
The first card turned over sets the maximum deadwood value for knocking.
H
Hollywood Gin
Three scoreboards at once – every win is entered into several running games.
3
Three players
One player sits out each round. Whoever reaches 100 points first is out – last one standing wins.
S
Straight Gin
Knocking is not allowed – play continues until someone has Gin.
VI · Tips & Tricks

What really
matters

VI
Strategy Tips
+

Don't knock immediately at 10 or less deadwood – often wait one or two more turns to increase the undercut risk for your opponent.

+

Keep track of your opponent's discarded cards – they reveal which runs they probably can no longer build.

+

Discard high single cards early if they fit no recognisable meld – they cost the most points in an undercut.

+

If your opponent draws many low cards, they might be close to Gin – increase your own risk tempo accordingly.

Common Mistakes

Knocking too early even though there was still potential for Gin – that gives away the 25 bonus points.

Ignoring your opponent's cards – whoever doesn't watch what's discarded walks straight into the undercut risk.

Forgetting that after a knock the opponent may still lay off – that can wipe out your advantage completely.

Holding on to an unlikely run for too long instead of reducing deadwood early.
