Teams build
canastas

I

Canasta is a team game for four players in two teams of two. The goal is to build “canastas” – melds of seven or more cards of the same rank. The first team to reach 5000 points wins.

Jokers and 2s are wild cards and can stand in for any card – but they turn a natural canasta into a mixed one, which is worth fewer points.

II · Setup

Before the
game begins

II
1
Shuffle the cards
Shuffle two complete decks plus four jokers.
2
Deal the cards
Each of the four players receives 11 cards. The rest form the draw pile.
3
Discard pile
Turn over the top card. If the first card is a red 3 or a joker: turn over another.
Before you start

Plan together as a team which ranks you collect – separate strategies waste valuable turns.

III · Card Values
Not all canastas
are equal
III
Natural canasta
7 natural cards
Seven cards of the same rank without jokers or 2s. Worth: 500 points.
Mixed canasta
With joker/2
Seven cards with at least one joker or a 2. Worth: 300 points.
J
Jokers & 2s
Wild cards
Jokers (50 pts) and 2s (20 pts) can stand in for any card – a maximum of 3 per meld.
3
Red 3
Bonus points
Lay red 3s face up immediately: 100 points each. All four red 3s: 800 points.

1

Draw from the face-down pile – or pick up the entire discard pile (under conditions).
2
Play cards
Lay melds of 3+ cards of the same rank in front of your team or add to existing melds.
3

Seven cards of the same rank: the canasta is complete. Square up the pile, red card on top.
4
Take the discard pile
Pick up the entire discard pile if you can meld the top card immediately.
5
End the round
A player may go out with their last card if their team has at least one canasta. Then all points are counted. The first team to reach 5000 total points wins.

VI · Tips & Tricks

What really
matters

VI
Strategy Tips
+

As a team, build two to three canastas in parallel instead of focusing on one rank – it keeps you flexible when drawing.

+

Save jokers and 2s for natural canastas where possible – a natural canasta is worth almost twice as much as a mixed one.

+

Pick up the entire discard pile as soon as you can legally meld the top card – it instantly brings more material into play.

+

Keep an eye on red threes at all times – they must be laid face up and score bonus points regardless of the rest of the game.

Common Mistakes

Using up too many jokers and 2s in a single canasta instead of spreading them across several melds.

Forgetting that a round may only be ended when the team has at least one complete canasta.

Ignoring the discard pile even though a single matching card could pick it up entirely.

Playing black threes too early – they block the opponent from taking the discard pile, so they should be used tactically.
